seeing with new eyes

Young children have such an amazing outlook. I wish I could see the world through a child's eyes just for a while.

In my writing class we are working on using metaphors in our writing, and it's not my strong point. My three-year-old niece grasps the concept much better than I do.

The other evening she was over at our house. The moon was a shiny sliver in the sky. My niece ran over to the window and looked out. She gasped in surprise and awe, "There's a diamond in your sky!!!" She couldn't stop looking at the diamond hanging in our sky.

I have to add just a little more to what Holli was mentioning about our niece. She's a very smart girl and grasps many things that I don't think most kids do at her age...and I know, I know...everyone's little boy or girl or in our case, niece, is soooo smart. Well, I'm not the type to brag about that unless it's true. She pays more attention to things you'd never think she would. Five days ago I told her that I'd be missing her birthday party tomorrow because I would be in Texas, but that I would call her to say Happy Birthday. Tuesday night after we sat for her and her brother, she gave me a hug as was a little sad as said, "You be in Texas?" to which I replied, "Yep." "And you call me?"

She's just smart. I wish I was that smart...
